Dussehra Festival
The Dussehra festival is a three-day Hindu festival held in the moth of Sept-Oct. Although Dussehra is celebrated all over India but it has a different charm as a fair in Kota. On the day of Dussehra, a huge fair is organized in large gardens, where local people gather in colorful clothes to worship Lord Rama and celebrate his victory. Ramlila is performed and colorful effigies, some as high as 100 feet, of Ravana, Meghnath and Kumbhakaran are burnt. Normally loud crackers are put inside them that produce deafening noises when ignited.
Gangaur Festival
Gangaur Festivals holds a special significance for the Rajasthanis and it is widely celebrated traditional festivals here. 'Gan' represents Lord Shiva and 'Gaur' represents Goddess Gauri or Parvati. The festival helds in honor of Gauri who is regarded as the symbol of virtue and fidelity and a mythological role model for married women.
The celebrations in Jaipur, Jodhpur, Bikaner and Udaipur have a unique charm and attraction. The festival commences with the ritual of collecting ashes from Holika Dahan and planting seeds of wheat and barley in it. While women carry the painted water pots on their heads, songs praising the deities ‘Isar' and ‘Gauri' are sung. Colorful idols of Gauri are taken out on the last day in a procession accompanied by camels.
Teej Festival
Held during the monsoons, July-August Teej is a festival to rejoice the colors, crisscross green-yellow lines, mehandi, rains and swings. The festival is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Parvati and this time it is married women who pray for a happy and long married life.
The rituals allow the women to pamper and enjoy themselves, to feast, to dress in the best of clothes and jewellery. Women sing songs and enjoy rope swings. Parents of married girls send gifts, sweets and clothes to their daughter's home. Though the festival is celebrated all over the state but it is particularly colorful in Jaipur.
Elephant Festival
Celebrated also in March around Holi is the Elephant Festival of the capital Jaipur, a tourists' delight. The mighty mammals claim center stage and stride majestically parading their decorated trunks and tusks. The festival begins with a procession of elephants, camels and horses followed by folk dancers at their entertaining best. The god worshiped on the occasion, Ganapati, is the elephant son of Shiva and Parvati.
